Living longer is one of society’s greatest achievements, but longevity should be measured by more than the number of birthdays we celebrate. The real goal is to add life to our years: maintaining health, purpose, independence, relationships and enjoyment for as long as possible.

Radio Your World 360 will promote a positive and realistic approach to ageing. We will challenge the assumption that later life is defined only by decline. Ageing can bring physical changes and health difficulties, but it can also bring wisdom, confidence, freedom and new opportunities to contribute.

Healthy ageing begins long before old age. Habits involving movement, nutrition, sleep, social connection and preventive healthcare accumulate across the life course. It is never too early to invest in future health, but it is also rarely too late to make a beneficial change.

Our programmes will bring together doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, nutrition professionals, mental-health practitioners, social-care experts and older people themselves. Subjects will include heart health, bone strength, mobility, memory, medication safety, hearing, vision, sleep and the prevention of falls.

Physical activity will be discussed as an essential part of maintaining independence. Movement does not have to involve intense exercise. Walking, strength training, balance practice, yoga, tai chi and everyday activities can all contribute when adapted to an individual’s health and abilities. People with medical conditions should seek appropriate professional guidance before beginning unfamiliar exercise.

Nutrition also changes in importance as we age. Adequate protein, hydration, fibre, vitamins and minerals support strength and general health, but appetite, dental problems, medication and social isolation may affect food intake. Our experts will translate nutritional principles into realistic meals and habits.

Emotional and social wellbeing are equally important. Loneliness can affect mental and physical health, particularly after bereavement, retirement or reduced mobility. Community groups, volunteering, faith organisations, learning opportunities and intergenerational activities can restore connection and purpose.

Retirement should not be treated as withdrawal from society. Older adults possess knowledge accumulated through careers, families and community life. Mentoring younger people, volunteering, teaching, caring and creative work allow that experience to continue benefiting others. Radio Your World 360 will provide opportunities for older voices to share their wisdom.

Technology can help people remain connected and independent, but it can also create exclusion. Digital services should not leave older citizens behind. We will offer accessible discussions about smartphones, online safety, digital healthcare and communication platforms, always respecting the fact that learning new technology may require time and patient support.

Ageism will be challenged wherever it appears. Older people should not be spoken about as though they are all alike or as though their views no longer matter. Decisions about healthcare, housing, community services and technology must include those most affected by them.

Planning is also part of ageing well. Honest conversations about future care, finances, living arrangements and personal wishes can reduce uncertainty for individuals and families. Such planning is not pessimistic. It allows people to retain greater control over decisions that matter deeply to them.

Radio Your World 360 will celebrate later life while remaining honest about its difficulties. We will discuss illness, caring needs and loss compassionately, but we will also feature achievement, learning, friendship, travel, creativity and new beginnings.

Age does not erase ambition. It does not remove the need for connection, respect or joy. Every stage of life deserves to be lived with dignity and possibility.
